I was born in Chicago, Illinois. I attended The University of Chicago Laboratory School from 1st grade to 4th grade, William H. Ray Elementary School from 5th grade to 8th grade, and Kenwood High School (9th-12th). For college I attended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a Master of Science degree in speech and language pathology. From there I accepted a McKnight Fellowship (currently known as the Florida Endowment Fund) to attend the Florida State University doctoral program in communication disorders where I continued my training as a speech and language pathologist.
Over the past 25 years I have worked extensively with children from preschool through high school. As a mentor, teacher, motivator, and friend, I have tried to guide all of my students in the direction of positive and critical thinking, character building, and love of self. I have used poetry as one means of doing this, and many of the poems in this book were inspired by students that I have worked with over the years.
I sincerely hope that you enjoy reading 101 Recitable Poems for School Age Children. You can memorize, recite, and act out your favorite poem(s) at school, home, or anywhere that inspires you to read and learn.

Students love it when authors visit their school. I love it just as much as they do. I read, recite, and act out various poems from the book. I also introduce newly written poems to get valuable student feedback. The presentation is interactive. That is, students are able to join in by filling in missing rhyming words as I recite a poem, guessing the title of a poem after listening to it, acting out the poem as I read/recite it, and of course asking/answering questions about anything related to the writing and publishing of books in general.
